Does U.S. Suck at Design?
Creating Passionate Users ask “Does US Suck at Design?” Interesting observations about the culture of aesthetics (or lackthereof) in the U.S. I had a similar reaction when someone paid me with the new British pounds (using 3 different denominations) at an event recently. When I got back home I couldn’t help but compare the each type of US currency and carefully gaze at the beauty of it in comparison to the US dollar. Although I did notice that the US is now adding some slight color background differences in their dollars.
It says something when Japan’s mancovers are not only better than our regular mancover’s but are also better than the highly publicized, millenium edition manhole covers that Karim Rashid designed for NYC. I think alot of it has to do with that most of Europe urban areas developed when art and architecture was done by by skilled masters who left an inprint into the minds of all Europeans who followed. America doesn’t have much traditional architecture that is imprinted in our mind. All we have is modernist and post-modern art which makes many people consider that art is something subjective. Also, I’m sure this has something to do with education. In the US, we generally have a very poor arts curriculum.
